Mother Earth Farm PA Chickens
Now offering pasture raised chickens
Beginning in 2019, Mother Earth Farm PA will be offering whole chickens for purchase. All of our birds are raised with care from start to finish in an environment that allows them to simply "be chickens." The birds are raised on pasture in a movable pen at the farm which allows them to forage on fresh grass and enjoy the sunshine. The birds are processed and packaged by us on site, by hand, as humanely as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What does ‘pasture raised’ mean?
A1. Our birds are raised in an enclosed, open air, space that is moved a few times per week. This gives our birds fresh ground to scratch at, increasing the amount of their diet that comes from natural foraging. Fresh grass also provides a clean, dry, area for our chickens to grow while eliminating potentially harmful pathogens that build up in the soil. Pasture raised chickens require a little more effort but the results are healthier, happier chickens.
Q2. Are they organic?
A2. No. Our chickens are fed grain, however we try to maximize the amount of "natural" food in their diet by encouraging foraging and feeding them vegetables from the farm that didn't quite make it into a Farm-to-Table share. Organic birds can be purchased at an additional cost.
Q3. When are they offered?
A3. We raise multiple flocks throughout the year and will give our members a month or two notice before they become available.
Q4. How much do they weigh?
A4. Dressed birds typically weigh between 4 and 6 pounds. This weight provides plenty of size while avoiding higher weights that can result in lower quality meat and health issues for the chickens.
Q5. How much do they cost?
A5. Depending on the breed raised, whole birds are sold at $5.00 to $7.00 per pound.
Q6. I’d like to buy many birds at once, how long do they last?
A6. All our birds are hand-packaged in BPA-free freezer bags that maintain excellent quality up to 12 months in the freezer. Non-frozen birds can be provided on request.
Q7. What variety of chickens do you raise?
A7. Both cornish cross and heritage breeds.
Q8. Do I have to be a member to purchase?
A8. No, anyone interested can purchase our chickens. Pick-up is in Indiana at Farmer Jennica’s house near Mack Park.
